Out of every 100 LED TV repair jobs we do, 80 fall into the same ten patterns. If your set is misbehaving, there's a strong chance it's one of these.

1. Black screen but sound works

What it is: Backlight failure โ€” the LCD panel is fine, but the LEDs that light it up have died. Test by shining a flashlight at the screen in a dark room: you'll see a faint picture if the backlight is the only issue.

Fix: Replace the backlight strips and/or driver board. โ‚น1,500โ€“3,500 depending on TV size.

2. TV won't turn on at all

What it is: 70% of the time it's the SMPS (power supply) โ€” usually 1โ€“3 capacitors that have bulged or leaked. The TV may make a click or the standby light may blink in a pattern.

Fix: Replace the bad capacitors. โ‚น400โ€“1,200.

3. Vertical lines across the screen

What it is: Either a failing T-CON (timing-controller) board, a loose LVDS cable, or in rare cases the panel itself starting to die.

Fix: Re-seat the cable first (free), then if needed swap the T-CON. โ‚น800โ€“2,500. Panel-level lines are not economically repairable.

4. Half-screen darker than the other

What it is: One row or one half of the backlight strips has failed.

Fix: Replace just the affected strip. โ‚น1,800โ€“3,500.

5. TV restarts every few minutes

What it is: Either SMPS capacitors that have drifted out of spec, a thermal problem on the mainboard, or a corrupt firmware update.

Fix: Cap replacement (โ‚น500โ€“1,200), thermal repaste (โ‚น600โ€“1,000), or firmware re-flash (โ‚น500โ€“800).

6. Picture is too dim even at 100% brightness

What it is: Some backlight strips have gone โ€” typically 2 or 3 of the 6 or 8 strips behind the panel.

Fix: Strip replacement. โ‚น1,500โ€“3,500.

7. Sound but no signal from HDMI

What it is: Static or surge damage to the HDMI port chip. Sometimes only one HDMI port is dead and another works fine.

Fix: Try a different HDMI input first. If all are dead, the HDMI board needs repair or replacement. โ‚น1,200โ€“3,500.

8. Remote doesn't work, but TV is fine

What it is: Almost always the remote, not the TV. Test it by pointing it at a phone camera and pressing buttons โ€” you'll see a white flash from the IR LED if the remote is alive.

Fix: New remote โ‚น250โ€“800. If the IR receiver on the TV is dead, that's a board-level fix.

9. TV makes a click but doesn't turn on

What it is: The SMPS is trying to power up but immediately shutting down โ€” protection mode. Usually a short on one of the rails.

Fix: Find and replace the shorted component (cap, MOSFET, or backlight strip). โ‚น600โ€“2,500.

10. Smart TV apps crash or won't load

What it is: Software, not hardware. Either a corrupt firmware, full app cache, or expired security certificate.

Fix: Clear cache โ†’ factory reset โ†’ firmware reflash. โ‚น500โ€“1,000 if a technician does it. Free if you do it yourself from Settings.
