A microwave that runs but doesn't heat is one of the most common home-appliance complaints. The good news is it's usually one of six things. The not-so-good news: the inside of a microwave contains some of the most dangerous voltages in your home, and we strongly recommend you don't open it yourself.
โ ๏ธ Safety first โ please read
The high-voltage capacitor inside a microwave can hold a charge of 4,000+ volts for hours after the unit is unplugged. This can be fatal. Do not open your microwave under any circumstances unless you are a trained appliance technician with the right discharge tools. Everything below is to help you understand what's wrong โ not to fix it yourself.
The six causes โ in order of likelihood
1. Failed magnetron (most common)
The magnetron is the tube that actually generates the microwave radiation. It's the most common failure point โ they typically last 6โ10 years of regular use. When it dies, the fan still runs, the light still works, the turntable still spins โ but no heat. This is often misdiagnosed as "the controls are broken" because everything seems to work.
Cost to repair: โน1,200โ2,800 (parts + labour). Always replaced as a unit, never repaired internally.
2. High-voltage capacitor failure
The HV capacitor stores and releases the energy that powers the magnetron. When it fails, the magnetron can't get the voltage it needs to oscillate. Often fails together with the HV diode โ many technicians replace both at the same time as standard practice.
Cost to repair: โน400โ900 for parts and labour.
3. HV diode failure
The diode rectifies the AC from the transformer to feed the magnetron. When it fails, the magnetron usually buzzes audibly but doesn't produce heat.
Cost to repair: โน250โ600.
4. HV transformer failure
Less common but more expensive โ the transformer steps up the wall voltage from 230V to ~2,200V to drive the magnetron circuit. Burnt-out transformers usually have a strong electrical-burn smell.
Cost to repair: โน1,500โ3,500.
5. Door interlock switch failure
Three or four switches around the door tell the microwave it's safe to fire the magnetron. If any one fails, the oven runs in "fan only" mode without heating. Sometimes mistakenly diagnosed as a control-panel issue.
Cost to repair: โน350โ800.
6. Burnt-out thermal fuse or thermostat
A safety device that cuts power if the cavity overheats. Once tripped, it usually doesn't reset by itself.
Cost to repair: โน250โ500.
What you can safely check yourself
- Confirm power. Lights on? Display working? Fan and turntable running? If yes, you have power.
- Check the door. Does it close fully and click? A gap as small as 2 mm will prevent the magnetron from firing.
- Listen carefully. A loud humming sound when you press start, but no heat, suggests the HV section is being asked to run but a component is failing.
- Smell. A burnt-electrical smell after running suggests a transformer, capacitor, or magnetron failure.
- Try a 1-cup-of-water test. Run for 1 minute on full power. If the water is room temperature at the end, you have a heat-circuit problem (the four causes above). If the water boils, the problem is something else (uneven heating, food-specific).
The repair-vs-replace question
Most microwaves are worth repairing if:
- The unit is less than 10 years old
- The cavity (the metal box where food goes) is rust-free
- The repair cost is under 60% of a new comparable model
If you have rust inside the cavity โ especially around the bottom or near the waveguide cover โ the unit is unsafe and should be replaced. Microwave radiation needs an intact metal cage to stay contained.
What to expect when you book a repair
Our standard process: you tell us the brand, model, and what's happening. We arrive with the most likely parts (magnetron + capacitor) in the kit. We discharge the high-voltage capacitor safely first โ this is non-negotiable โ then test each component until we find the fault. Most repairs are completed at home in 45โ75 minutes.
Every repair includes a microwave-leakage test with a calibrated meter, which is the only way to confirm the cavity is safe to use again.
